EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
