Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
