The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will require the publication of official records concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after months of trying to forestall the joint action involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Both Chambers
The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
The public have waited long enough. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”
Presidential Signature
The measure next heads to Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Although the president has for months downplayed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Response
Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a public section, applauded after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he was concerned the measure would reveal specific data of people, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
