Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
